This compact townhouse courtyard in The Springs was transformed into a practical, low-maintenance family garden using premium artificial grass and vertical planting. The 55 sq m space was excavated and prepared with a compacted crushed rock sub-base before 35 sq m of premium 40mm artificial turf was installed. Two raised treated hardwood planter beds were added along the boundary with drip irrigation, while a galvanised wire trellis with climbing jasmine and Bougainvillea was introduced to soften the surrounding walls. The design makes better use of a compact Springs townhouse garden while keeping ongoing maintenance and watering requirements low.
The challenge
The main challenge was making a relatively compact and shaded Springs townhouse courtyard feel open, usable and green without introducing a high-maintenance lawn. The space also had exposed boundary walls that needed softening without taking up valuable floor area. Artificial grass provided a practical lawn alternative, while raised planters and vertical trellis planting added greenery along the boundaries and preserved the central usable area.
